The Gilded Angel Gabriel design is based on an image found in a neoclassic
pattern book in the rare books library of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
The pattern book was first published in 1777 and illustrates the interest at the
end of the 18th century in decorative devices used by ancient civilizations, an
interest sparked by period excavations in southern Italy.
