Description:
The Schooner Yacht America made history in 1815 by winning the first formal
racing competition between British and American yachts. Thereafter, the trophy
was known as the America's Cup. The America had a long and interesting history,
including sailing for both the North and South during the Civil War. James C.
Bard's (1815-97) original oil painting, now in the Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation's folk art collection, inspired this dramatic piece. Colors are
mainly blues; aqua-turquoise for the sea and light blue for the sky with
off-white sails.
